Before handling a manuscript
Establish whether you can assess the manuscript independently and with the subject expertise needed for a fair editorial decision.
- Confirm that the submission is relevant to your dental, oral-medicine, implantology or methodological expertise.
- Disclose a competing interest and step back from handling where it could affect independent judgment.
- Treat manuscripts, reviewer reports and editorial correspondence as confidential.
Assessment and reviewer selection
Initial editorial assessment clarifies whether a submission is suitable for external peer review and what expertise is required.
Question and contribution
Consider the research question, originality, clinical or scientific relevance, and the contribution the manuscript could make within JDOI's scope.
Methods and reporting
Consider whether methods, analysis, reporting, declarations and ethics information allow an informed peer-review process.
Reviewer selection
Invite reviewers whose subject and methodological expertise matches the manuscript, and consider independence and potential conflicts before inviting them.
Review management
Monitor reports for usefulness and clarity. Seek clarification or additional expertise when the manuscript or reviews require it.
Decisions and revisions
Editorial decisions should be grounded in the manuscript, the available reviews and applicable journal policies.
Decision rationale
Provide a clear, respectful editorial rationale that distinguishes essential issues from optional improvements where appropriate.
Revised manuscripts
Assess the authors' response and revised files against the decision letter. Seek further specialist assessment when the revision requires it.
Independent judgment
Reviewer recommendations inform the process; editorial decisions remain an independent scholarly responsibility.
Conflicts, ethics and integrity concerns
Protect independent handling and raise complex matters early through the journal's established editorial and policy routes.
Competing interests
Recuse yourself when a competing interest could affect, or reasonably appear to affect, impartial judgment.
Ethical or integrity concerns
Refer potential ethics, consent, data-integrity or image-integrity concerns to the editorial office and follow the applicable journal procedures.
Editor-authored submissions
An editor must not handle a manuscript on which they are an author or have a competing interest; it should be assigned for independent handling.
