Instructions For Authors

Comprehensive guidelines for preparing and submitting your nanotechnology research manuscript for peer review consideration at our journal.

Manuscript Preparation Guidelines

The Journal of Advances in Nanotechnology welcomes well-prepared manuscripts that meet our formatting standards and scientific rigor requirements. These comprehensive guidelines help authors present their nanotechnology research effectively while streamlining the peer review process and ensuring your submission receives prompt consideration.

Please review all sections carefully before submission. Manuscripts that do not conform to these guidelines may be returned for revision before peer review assignment, potentially delaying the evaluation of your important research. Following these instructions carefully will expedite the review process and improve your chances of successful publication.

Manuscript Structure and Organization

Original research manuscripts should follow a standard scientific structure that enables clear communication of methods, results, and interpretation. Organize your manuscript with the following sections in order, ensuring each section provides sufficient detail for readers to understand and potentially reproduce your work.

Title Page Requirements

  • Concise, informative title (maximum 150 characters including spaces)
  • Complete author names with institutional affiliations
  • Corresponding author designated with email and phone
  • ORCID identifiers for all authors (required for corresponding author)
  • Keywords (5-8 terms) for indexing and discoverability
  • Running title (maximum 50 characters) for page headers
  • Word count and figure/table counts

Abstract Requirements

  • Structured format with Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions sections
  • Maximum 300 words providing comprehensive summary
  • No citations, abbreviations, or reference to figures
  • Standalone summary enabling understanding without full text
  • Clear statement of key findings and their significance
  • Quantitative results where appropriate

Main Text Structure

  • Introduction establishing context and stating clear objectives
  • Materials and Methods with complete experimental detail
  • Results presenting data with supporting figures and tables
  • Discussion interpreting findings in context of prior work
  • Conclusions summarizing key contributions and implications
  • Clear transitions between sections

Back Matter Requirements

  • Acknowledgments recognizing non-author contributions
  • Author contributions statement using CRediT taxonomy
  • Funding disclosure with grant numbers and agencies
  • Conflicts of interest declaration (required even if none)
  • Data availability statement describing data access
  • Ethics statement for human/animal research if applicable
Formatting and Technical Requirements

Manuscripts must be prepared in Microsoft Word (.docx) or LaTeX format with appropriate style files available from the journal website. Use double spacing throughout with 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font for optimal readability during review. Number all pages consecutively starting from the title page. Include continuous line numbers in the left margin to facilitate specific reviewer comments during evaluation.

File format requirements: Submit manuscripts as .docx or .tex files with all text editable. Figures should be provided as separate high-resolution files in TIFF, PNG, or EPS format with minimum 300 dpi for photographs and microscopy images, 600 dpi for line art, graphs, and diagrams. Vector formats (EPS, PDF) are preferred for graphs and line drawings to ensure optimal reproduction quality at any size.

Tables should be editable (not images) and included either within the manuscript at appropriate locations or as separate files. Each table requires a descriptive title and explanatory footnotes defining all abbreviations and statistical notation used.

Figure and Table Guidelines

Figures and tables are essential for communicating nanotechnology research effectively, particularly for characterization data, device performance, and nanoscale imaging. Each figure and table must be cited in the main text and numbered consecutively in order of first mention. Provide descriptive captions that allow understanding without reference to the main text, including experimental conditions, scale information, and key observations.

Figure Requirements

  • High resolution (300+ dpi for images, 600+ dpi for line art)
  • Clear axis labels with units and appropriate font sizes
  • Legends explaining all data series and symbols
  • Scale bars mandatory for all microscopy images
  • Color-blind accessible palettes strongly preferred
  • Panel labels (a, b, c) for multi-part composite figures
  • Consistent styling across all figures in manuscript

Table Requirements

  • Editable format (not embedded images)
  • Clear column headers and row labels
  • Units specified in column headers not cells
  • Footnotes defining all abbreviations used
  • Statistical methods and significance noted
  • Appropriate significant figures throughout
  • Logical organization facilitating comparison
Reference Citation and Formatting

References should be formatted according to American Chemical Society (ACS) citation style, the standard for nanomaterials and chemistry publications. Number references consecutively in order of first citation within the text using superscript numbers. Include complete citation information including DOIs for all published works where available to facilitate reader access.

Reference management software such as EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley, or Paperpile is strongly recommended to maintain consistent formatting and avoid errors. Verify all reference information for accuracy before submission as incorrect citations delay publication and undermine scholarship. Ensure all cited works appear in the reference list and all references are cited in the text.

Supplementary Materials

Extended data, additional figures, methodology details, videos, and supporting information can be included as supplementary materials. These materials undergo peer review alongside the main manuscript and are published online with permanent links to the main article. Supplementary materials enable comprehensive documentation without lengthening the main manuscript.

Accepted Supplementary Formats

  • PDF for text documents and figure collections
  • Excel or CSV for data tables and datasets
  • MP4 or AVI for videos (maximum 50 MB)
  • ZIP archives for code repositories and large datasets
  • CIF files for crystallographic data
  • Raw instrument data in native formats

Supplementary Material Best Practices

  • Number files sequentially (Figure S1, Table S1, etc.)
  • Reference each supplementary item in main text
  • Include descriptive captions for all items
  • Keep file sizes reasonable (under 20 MB per file)
  • Ensure standalone comprehensibility
  • Organize logically matching manuscript flow
Research Ethics and Compliance

All manuscripts must comply with international research ethics standards. Include institutional ethics committee or IRB approval numbers for any studies involving human subjects or human-derived materials. Animal research requires IACUC approval or equivalent with explicit statements confirming humane treatment and compliance with institutional guidelines.

Data availability requirement: Authors must include a data availability statement describing how readers can access underlying research data supporting the published findings. We strongly encourage deposition in appropriate public repositories such as Figshare, Zenodo, Dryad, Materials Data Facility, NIST Materials Data Repository, or discipline-specific databases. Restricted access due to privacy concerns should be explained with contact information for data access requests.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reproduce any previously published material including figures, tables, or extensive text excerpts. Permission documentation should accompany the submission with appropriate credits in figure captions or acknowledgments.

Submission Process and Tracking

Submit manuscripts through our online submission system accessible from the journal homepage. The corresponding author creates an account and follows the step-by-step submission wizard guiding you through the complete process. Upload the manuscript file, separate figure files, supplementary materials, cover letter, and complete all required metadata fields accurately.

Upon successful submission, you will receive an automatic acknowledgment email containing your manuscript ID number for tracking purposes. Initial editorial screening typically completes within 3-5 business days, after which manuscripts are either assigned to appropriate peer reviewers or returned to authors for technical revision before review.

Revision and Resubmission Process

Authors receiving revision requests should carefully address all reviewer and editor comments in a detailed point-by-point response letter. Clearly indicate all changes made in the revised manuscript using tracked changes or highlighting for transparent review. Quote reviewer comments and provide specific responses explaining how each concern was addressed or why particular suggestions were not incorporated.

Upload the response letter, revised manuscript, and updated figures through the submission system within the revision deadline (typically 30 days for minor revision, 60 days for major revision). Extensions can be requested by contacting the editorial office before deadline expiration.
