Overview
Thyroid carcinoma is a malignancy that arises from the cells of the thyroid gland, an endocrine organ in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism. It encompasses several histological types, most commonly the differentiated cancers (papillary and follicular) that originate from follicular epithelial cells, along with medullary carcinoma arising from parafollicular C cells, poorly differentiated tumours, and the rare, aggressive anaplastic form. Presentation often involves a thyroid nodule or neck mass, and management is guided by tumour type, stage, and molecular features, typically combining surgery, radioactive iodine for differentiated disease, hormone suppression, and, for selected molecular subtypes, targeted systemic agents. Thyroid carcinoma is clinically important because of its rising reported incidence, generally favourable prognosis in differentiated forms, and the contrasting severity of medullary and anaplastic disease. Core topics include molecular and microRNA profiling, transcription-factor signalling in tumour cell proliferation, targeted therapy for RET-mutated medullary carcinoma, image-guided ablation, and treatment outcomes after surgery and radioactive iodine. Research published in this journal also addresses rare thyroid neoplasms such as leiomyosarcoma and metastatic tumours involving the gland, reflecting attention to both common differentiated cancers and unusual histological variants, their diagnosis, and their long-term outcomes.
