Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field of research involving the use of biological, medical, and engineering principles to develop biological tissue in the laboratory, from stem cells and/or from biological components. Tissue engineering has enabled the manufacture of vital organs, such as skin, bone, and blood vessels, for the purpose of medical treatments and regenerative medicine. It has also allowed scientists to study the molecular and biochemical aspects of tissue development and repair, thus providing greater insight into disease mechanisms, treatment, and prevention. Tissue engineering is increasingly being used in the treatment of injuries and diseases, as well as in cosmetic surgery and organ transplantation.
