Overview
Renewable energy is energy harnessed from natural sources that replenish on human timescales, including sunlight, wind, flowing water, biomass, and geothermal heat, in contrast to finite fossil fuels. Solar energy is captured photovoltaically, where semiconductor cells convert light directly into electricity, and thermally, where collectors and solar water-heating systems gather heat for domestic and industrial use. Bioenergy converts organic matter into usable fuel; anaerobic digestion of materials such as animal manure and food waste yields biogas, while algal biomass offers a promising feedstock for liquid biofuels. Hydrogen produced by water electrolysis, including alkaline electrolysis driven by surplus electricity, provides a storable, low-carbon energy carrier. Wind turbines extract kinetic energy from moving air, hydropower exploits the potential energy of water, and geothermal systems draw on subsurface heat. Because many of these sources are intermittent and generate variable direct-current output, power-conditioning electronics such as DC-DC boost converters and inverters are essential to match generation to load and grid requirements. Energy efficiency, particularly in the built environment, complements supply by reducing demand. Collectively, renewable energy technologies underpin decarbonization of electricity, heat, and transport, mitigate climate change, and strengthen energy security through diversified, locally available resources.
