Overview
Adenocarcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumour arising from glandular cells or from epithelium with secretory (glandular) differentiation, the histological hallmark being the formation of glandular or duct-like structures and mucin production. It is among the most common forms of carcinoma and occurs in organs with glandular tissue, including the Pancreas, lung, colon and rectum, stomach, prostate, breast, and endometrium. Tumour behaviour and prognosis depend on the organ of origin, histological grade and degree of differentiation, and anatomical stage, with poorly differentiated tumours generally more aggressive. Diagnosis rests on histopathology and immunohistochemistry, supported by imaging and tumour markers, and treatment typically combines surgery with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or targeted and immune therapies according to site and stage. Research in this area examines pancreatic adenocarcinoma, including massive haematemesis as an initial presentation and the comparative predictive value of CEA and bilirubin versus CA 19-9, together with groove pancreatitis. Further studies address a collision tumour of MALT lymphoma and poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, the trace-element content of prostatic adenocarcinoma, an estrogenic-potential assay using an endometrial adenocarcinoma cell line, eccrine porocarcinoma, glandular cystitis, adenosquamous gastric carcinoma, and miR-21 expression in oesophageal cancer. The journal publishes peer-reviewed oncology and pathology research on glandular malignancies.
