Overview
Pharmacology is the science of how drugs and other chemical agents interact with living systems, encompassing their mechanisms of action, effects on tissues and organisms, and the principles that govern their therapeutic use and safety. It bridges molecular target identification, the study of drug efficacy and toxicity, and the rational design and evaluation of new treatments. A major modern theme is network pharmacology, a systems-based approach that predicts the multiple targets and pathways through which a compound acts, applied for instance to natural products in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and anxiety-related conditions. The discipline also covers structure-activity relationships that link chemical features to biological effects, as in the design of enzyme inhibitors, and the pharmacology of cardiovascular and lipid-modifying agents assessed for efficacy and safety. Natural-product and ethnopharmacological research evaluates plant-derived compounds and their dose-response behaviour, while drug discovery integrates in silico, in vitro, and in vivo methods, including preclinical disease models for cardiotoxicity and safety testing. Psychopharmacology and the therapeutic use of immunoglobulins further illustrate its breadth. Research in this area characterises drug mechanisms and targets, evaluates efficacy and safety across experimental and clinical settings, and supports the discovery and rational application of therapeutic agents.
