Aims and Scope

Aims and Scope of the International Physiology Journal

The International Physiology Journal publishes peer-reviewed research on physiological function: how it is produced, how it is regulated, and how it changes. The journal considers work at every level of biological organization and in every organ system, and treats the relationships between levels as part of its subject rather than as a boundary between separate fields.

Eligibility rests on the physiological question a manuscript addresses and on the fit between its claims and its evidence. It does not rest on the organ system studied, the species used, the method chosen, or the topics that happen to appear most often in the journal’s existing record.

What the journal considers

The bands below describe the same discipline at four depths. A manuscript is in scope if it advances the understanding, measurement or interpretation of function at any of them, or of the coupling between them.

  1. Cellular and molecular physiology

Membrane transport, excitability, signal transduction, contractile and secretory mechanisms, and cellular energetics, where the work is physiologically substantive rather than incidental to a molecular or biochemical question.

    • Ion channels and transport
    • Excitability
    • Signal transduction
    • Cellular bioenergetics
    • Receptor physiology
  2. Tissue, microcirculation and exchange

Perfusion, oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, interstitial and epithelial transport, and the local conditions under which tissue performs work, including the physiology of tissue under load, injury or adaptation.

    • Microcirculation
    • Tissue oxygenation
    • Vascular and endothelial function
    • Epithelial transport
    • Tissue mechanics
  3. Organ systems and their regulation

Cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and fluid–electrolyte, endocrine and metabolic, gastrointestinal and hepatic, reproductive, neural, sensory and musculoskeletal function, together with the reflex, humoral and autonomic loops that couple one system to another.

    • Cardiovascular
    • Respiratory
    • Renal and fluid balance
    • Endocrine and metabolic
    • Neurophysiology and autonomic control
    • Gastrointestinal and hepatic
    • Reproductive and developmental
    • Muscle and skeletal
  4. Integrated and whole-organism function

The intact animal or person: responses to exercise, environment, altitude, temperature, nutrition, development, aging and disease; comparative and environmental physiology in non-human species; and the models, instruments and analytical methods that make physiological measurement possible.

    • Exercise and applied physiology
    • Environmental and thermal physiology
    • Comparative physiology
    • Developmental and aging physiology
    • Physiological measurement and modeling

Contexts

The kinds of work the journal accepts

Experimental, observational, theoretical, computational, methodological and translational studies are all within remit. A manuscript is judged against the claims it actually makes: a mechanistic study is held to mechanistic evidence, a methodological contribution to the validity of the method it describes, and a modeling study to the assumptions and data that support it.

The journal does not require every submission to demonstrate clinical utility, to include an experimental intervention, or to report a novel finding. Confirmatory work, negative results, replication and careful description are part of a healthy physiological literature and are considered on the same terms as any other contribution.

Physiology must be the subject of the manuscript, not an incidental mention. Work whose physiological content is limited to a passing reference sits outside this remit.

Claims of causation, prediction, efficacy or clinical use require evidence appropriate to that claim. Subject eligibility and evidential sufficiency are assessed separately.

The published record

How the archive relates to the scope

The journal’s published record illustrates this remit and does not define it. Topics that appear often in the archive — among them exercise and muscle physiology, cardiovascular and autonomic measurement, and applied clinical physiology — are examples of what has been submitted, not a statement of what is eligible. Areas of the remit with few or no published papers remain equally open.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Editorial decisions are independent of fees, services, membership, and editorial or reviewer roles.

Submitting work within this remit

  • Primary route: ManuscriptZone
    oap.manuscriptzone.net

The editorial system used for the journal’s submissions.

  • Alternative route: Simple manuscript submission form
    openaccesspub.org/manuscript-submission-form

A short form that opens with International Physiology Journal already selected.

  • Assisted route: Editorial email
