Overview

Surgery is the branch of medicine that treats disease, injury, and deformity through operative manual and instrumental intervention, encompassing the incision, excision, repair, reconstruction, transplantation, or manipulation of tissues and organs. Its aims are to remove or correct pathology, restore function and structure, relieve symptoms, and prevent complications, guided by preoperative assessment, intraoperative technique, and perioperative care. The discipline spans numerous specialties, including general, cardiac, orthopaedic, ophthalmic, otolaryngological, and fetal surgery, and increasingly integrates technological advances such as laser-assisted and femtosecond techniques, image guidance, and minimally invasive approaches. Effective surgical practice requires management of operative risk, including thromboembolism, blood conservation, and the physiological consequences of anaesthesia and tissue handling, together with attention to outcomes across diverse patient populations. Surgery also intersects with oncology, where resection is combined with adjuvant therapies, and with reconstructive and functional goals across organ systems. The peer-reviewed research collected under this topic addresses cataract and other ophthalmic surgery, fetal surgery, otolaryngological and sinus procedures, cardiac surgery and haemodilution, orthopaedic thromboprophylaxis, nutritional consequences of surgery, and the surgical and radioiodine management of thyroid cancer, reflecting the field's breadth from technique and instrumentation to perioperative risk and long-term outcome across multiple surgical specialties.
