Overview

Physiology is the scientific study of the functions and integrated mechanisms of living organisms, examining how cells, tissues, organs, and systems operate and are regulated to maintain homeostasis. It addresses processes such as cardiovascular and respiratory function, neural and endocrine signalling, muscular contraction, metabolism, and the physiology of adipose and other tissues, as well as how these systems adapt to exercise, environmental stress, and pathological states. Spanning cellular, systems, comparative, and applied physiology, the field provides the functional counterpart to anatomy and the foundation for understanding disease, pharmacological action, and the dose-dependent responses of the body. Peer-reviewed work relevant to this topic examines the physiology of adipose tissue in relation to obesity, comparative and exercise physiology, modes of muscular contraction, cardiac physiology and pathophysiology across the female lifespan, single-ventricle physiology and nutrition in infants, the biochemical basis of controlled breathing, and elastic elements of muscle proteins. These contributions integrate experimental, clinical, and comparative approaches to clarify how normal function is sustained and how it is altered in disease, an area in which the journal publishes peer-reviewed research bearing on human and biomedical physiology.
