Overview
Biosynthesis is the set of enzyme-catalyzed processes by which living organisms construct complex molecules from simpler precursors. Through these anabolic reactions, cells assemble the proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and a vast array of secondary metabolites that are essential for structure, function, and survival. Biosynthetic pathways are organized into ordered sequences of reactions, each step catalyzed by specific enzymes and often requiring energy and cofactors such as vitamins and coenzymes. These pathways are tightly regulated to match the cell's needs and are deeply interconnected with the catabolic reactions that supply building blocks and energy. Biosynthesis underlies fundamental biology, from the production of amino acids and their derivatives to the formation of bioactive natural products, and it has wide application in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology, where it is harnessed to manufacture pharmaceuticals, enzymes, and other valuable compounds. Within biochemistry, the study of biosynthesis illuminates how metabolic pathways are built and controlled and how disruptions can lead to disease.
