Antibodies, or immunoglobulins, are glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes and plasma cells that recognize and bind specific molecular targets called antigens with high affinity and specificity. Each antibody comprises paired heavy and light chains forming variable regions that determine antigen recognition and constant regions that mediate effector functions such as neutralization, opsonization, complement activation, and recruitment of immune cells. The major isotypes, including IgG, IgM, IgA, IgE, and IgD, differ in structure, valency, tissue distribution, and biological role. Beyond their function in humoral immunity, antibodies are foundational reagents and therapeutics: monoclonal antibodies, single-domain and single-chain variable fragment (scFv) constructs, and engineered formats underpin diagnostics, immunoassays, and targeted treatment.
