Overview
Antibodies, or immunoglobulins, are glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes and plasma cells that recognize and bind specific molecular targets called antigens with high affinity and specificity. Each antibody comprises paired heavy and light chains forming variable regions that determine antigen recognition and constant regions that mediate effector functions such as neutralization, opsonization, complement activation, and recruitment of immune cells. The major isotypes, including IgG, IgM, IgA, IgE, and IgD, differ in structure, valency, tissue distribution, and biological role. Beyond their function in humoral immunity, antibodies are foundational reagents and therapeutics: monoclonal antibodies, single-domain and single-chain variable fragment (scFv) constructs, and engineered formats underpin diagnostics, immunoassays, and targeted treatment. Research in this area examines neutralizing antibodies in convalescent plasma against SARS-CoV-2, generation of single-domain antibodies against bacterial pathogens, isolation of human monoclonal scFv antibodies recognizing receptor heteromers, donor-specific anti-HLA antibodies in transplantation, and autoantibodies in hematologic disease, alongside emerging immunoassay and immunogenomic approaches for immunomonitoring in cancer and infection. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work spanning antibody structure, generation, characterization, and application across immunology, infectious disease, hematology, and biochemistry, connecting molecular recognition to diagnostic and therapeutic practice.
