Overview

Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, distinguished by an unusual γ-glutamyl peptide bond and a free thiol on its cysteine residue that confers its biochemical activity. It is the most abundant low-molecular-weight intracellular antioxidant and exists in a dynamic equilibrium between reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) forms, the ratio of which serves as a sensitive indicator of cellular redox status. Glutathione scavenges reactive oxygen species and free radicals, acts as the cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases, regenerates other antioxidants, and conjugates xenobiotics and electrophiles during phase II detoxification, functions especially prominent in hepatic tissue. Depletion of glutathione and disruption of redox balance contribute to oxidative injury, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and apoptosis in liver, cardiac, testicular, neuronal, and ocular tissues, making glutathione status a frequent endpoint in studies of toxicant exposure and tissue protection. Much research evaluates plant-derived flavonoids, polyphenols, and other antioxidant compounds for their capacity to preserve glutathione levels and mitigate oxidative stress in experimental disease and injury models. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on amino-acid biochemistry, antioxidant defence, and the role of glutathione in redox regulation and detoxification.
