Overview
Amino acids are small organic molecules that form the building blocks of proteins and are fundamental to all forms of life. Each consists of a central carbon bonded to an amino group, a carboxyl group, a hydrogen atom, and a variable side chain whose structure defines the individual amino acid and its chemical behavior. Linked together in specific sequences, amino acids form peptides and proteins that perform structural, catalytic, transport, and signaling functions. They also contribute to energy production, metabolism, and growth, and when dietary proteins are digested, their constituent amino acids are released for reuse in synthesizing new proteins and other essential compounds. A subset known as essential amino acids cannot be made by the human body and must be supplied through the diet. Research published in this journal spans the chemistry, analysis, and biology of amino acids and peptides. Contributions include methods for quantifying neutral amino acids, approaches to solid-phase peptide synthesis in aqueous solution, and strategies for protecting reactive side chains during synthesis. Further work examines amino acids and their derivatives in the pathogenesis and treatment of liver disease, proteomic techniques using stable-isotope labeling, and molecular analysis of inborn errors of amino acid metabolism such as phenylketonuria. Together these themes connect amino acid structure and analytical methods to metabolism, nutrition, and disease.
