Overview
An embryo is the earliest stage of a developing organism following fertilization, spanning in humans the period from the zygote through approximately the eighth week of gestation, after which the conceptus is termed a fetus. During this interval the embryo undergoes cleavage to form the blastocyst, implantation, gastrulation to establish the three germ layers, and organogenesis, in which the rudiments of the major organ systems are laid down through coordinated gene expression, cell signaling, and morphogenetic movement. Embryos are central to reproductive biology and to assisted reproductive technologies, where embryos generated by in vitro fertilization are cultured, assessed, and selected for transfer, and they are also key models for studying developmental mechanisms and regeneration. Research relevant to this topic addresses in vitro maturation of immature oocytes, ovarian stimulation and oocyte quality in IVF patients, prevention of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, signaling of decidualization and uterine receptivity, the molecular control of human embryonic development, evolutionary conservation of Hox genes in brain development, and stem-cell differentiation-stage factors derived from zebrafish embryos. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on embryonic development, oocyte and embryo biology, and the cellular and molecular processes governing early development across human, animal, and experimental systems.
